SEO Editing: Start with your Title Tag

A title tag is the main title of your blog that a search engine will index. It is located in the title bar of your browser and in the heading of results from search engines.  Your main objective here is that when your keyword is searched you can entice people to want to choose your Title Tag or the title of your blog. The key is in the SEO editing.

SEO Editing: 5 Tips

  • First, you need to decide what keywords you would like to rank for. Here is where you have to put yourself in people’s shoes. Think about how someone would search for your topic. Try thinking about the different questions that users may have in regards to your topic. Try to answer the specific questions that a user may be searching for. This will help you decide what the best keywords for your topic are.
  • Research - Enter your keywords that you have decided on in your search engine. Pay special attention to what the search engine is suggesting to you as you are typing in your keywords. Write down these suggestions. Try using different types of keyword combinations so that you can see various suggestions.  You want to write your title with these words in the same order that they appear in the search engine. You may want to try using Google Instant and write down what it suggests or you can use Google Adwords Keyword Tool. In Google Instant, results are shown as you type. This is useful because you are actually seeing results that will give you better search turnaround. In Google Adwords Keyword Tool, it shows you how many people are searching for your selected keywords and also reveals related phrases. It also will give you an indication of how competitive your keywords may be. (Keep in mind, that the higher the competition, the tougher it will be to reach page one.)
  • Use Keywords at Beginning of Title - Put the keyword that you are trying to rank for at the beginning of your title. Your goal is to show up on page one of Google and people are more likely to notice you a lot quicker as they scan quickly down the page. Search engines will give more preference to the first few words in your title.

  • Title Needs to Be Short - The Rule is the keep your title short and sweet, usually under 60 characters is good. The majority of search engines will only see the first 60 characters of your title and chunk the rest. If your title is too long then it will show up incomplete when people are scanning and more than likely will skipped.
  • Don’t Get Fancy - When you are trying to come up with the title for your blog, you need to keep in mind what type of language people are using. You’re not writing a fancy poem or story.
